As those chilly winter days settle into the Valley, one of the best places to be in your home is in front of the fireplace. And whether it’s fireplace and stove insert maintenance or finding a new state-of-the art EPA-certified stove, Gorman’s Stove Sales & Valley Chimney Sweeps are your trusted choice. Since 1980, they have been helping homeowners enjoy their hearths.
A Family Affair
Founder Fred Gorman was stationed overseas in Germany and noticed chimney sweeps at work. Intrigued, he learned about their profession. Then, when he returned to the US, he set up shop. “Many people don’t realize the amount of dangerous buildup that occurs in their chimneys, and creates the risk of chimney fires. I started to clean my neighbors’ fireplaces, did a little advertising, and Gorman’s Chimney Sweep was born.”
The Modesto-based company is a fully licensed, bonded and insured chimney service specialist that provides chimney cleaning, repair, inspection, and other services. Fred’s whole family is involved in the business, from his wife Trudy who handles the scheduling and customer service, to his son Mike who has been his partner for the past 37 years – “He’s the kid I make go up on the roof,” Fred grins. Mike’s son, Mike Jr. has joined the company as a sales person, manages the stove showroom, and also works in the field alongside his father and grandfather.
It’s All about Hearth
Gorman’s has diversified over the years. “We are full-service indoor and outdoor hearth experts,” Fred says. “We have a beautiful 900 square foot showroom in Modesto at 3516 Oakdale Road, Suite C, right at the corner of Sylvan and Oakdale Roads, featuring the latest in fireplace inserts and free-standing stoves, with such brands as Enviro, Pacific Energy, True North, and Kingsman.”
“We also build fire pits and outdoor barbeques, as well as doing custom island designs, and feature such brands as Fire Magic, AOG Grills, and Jackson Grills. We work with architects, designers, contractors, realtors, renters and homeowners, and can handle all service and repair problems, as well as providing consultations. We really enjoy the different people we get to work with because we have a chance to combine creativity with expertise, and our customers trust us.”
Fred and Mike have taken care of my fireplace and stove insert for over 20 years. After some poor experiences with other providers – including an expensive and unnecessary repair – I appreciated Fred’s “old-fashioned” business philosophy of integrity, industry expertise and being focused on customer satisfaction. So when the EPA announced that old stove inserts needed to be upgraded to an EPA-certified stove, I naturally turned to them. They assessed our insert space and made recommendations as to what would serve us the best. They removed and properly discarded the old stove, installed the new one, advised us on proper usage, and filed the necessary paperwork. As I write this, it’s keeping our home cozy.
“The hearth, whether it’s inside or out, is a family and friends gathering spot,” Mike says. “It’s the heart of any home. You might say that we help to create new traditions and wonderful memories.”
Gorman’s is working on a website. “For nearly 40 years, we’ve largely relied on word of mouth,” Fred laughs. “But my grandson made the point that today’s audience starts by first looking online, so we’re working on getting that set up.” Meanwhile, to contact Gorman’s, call (209) 522-3480 for stove sales, and (209) 522-3461 for chimney service and repair.
