Liposuction is the process of removing fat with cannulas or rigid tubes attached to a vacuum. Fat is commonly removed from the neck, waistline, back, arms, and thighs. Liposuction can be performed alone or in combination with other procedures. This can be performed under local anesthesia, conscious sedation, or general anesthesia. Liposuction gives better results than the newer laser or fat freezing procedures.
Cannulas are used to remove or aspirate the fat. Smaller cannulas are generally used closer to the surface and areas where the fat is less abundant. Larger cannulas can be used in other areas to reduce the time it takes to aspirate the fat.
The disadvantage of larger cannulas is the possibility of irregularities or depressions. The cannulas are inserted through small incisions, which heal with minimal scars. Several incisions are used to access an area which allows a crisscrossing pattern to the fat removal. This also reduces the chance of depressions.
The incisions for neck liposuction are typically located under the chin and at the base of each ear lobe. Neck liposuction is often combined with face and neck lifting. Liposuction around the waist reduces the waistline.
At times, the extra skin must be removed requiring a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty. Liposuction can also be performed on the upper and lower back and is commonly performed on the outer and inner thighs.
Tumescent liposuction involves placing a large amount of fluid into the treatment area. The tumescent fluid is mostly saline or salt water. It also contains Lidocaine for the numbing effect, Bicarbonate that reduces the stinging, and Kenalog, which should help with swelling. The tumescent technique greatly reduces bruising and discomfort after the procedure.
Liposuction will remove more fat than the new non-invasive fat reduction procedures. These procedures are not used for weight loss. They help those areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. SculpSure is a non-invasive device that uses a laser to destroy fat cells. Since it is non-surgical there is less risk and downtime compared with liposuction.
After undergoing liposuction, it is best to take it easy for several days. There is generally very little pain after liposuction. Compression is generally applied to the areas by wearing a garment or elastic band. This helps reduce the bruising and swelling and speed up the recovery.
