Get ready to skate! Modesto on Ice is back in town, and celebrating its five year anniversary with even more fun for families, friends – and companies. Located next to Modesto Centre Plaza, the covered outdoor ice rink has become a popular destination as the parking lot is transformed into a winter wonderland of sparkling lights, music and holiday cheer .
An Ice Rink in Modesto?
The brainchild of Andrea and Jerome Murray, the rink attracts thousands of guests. “Back in 2014, we came up with an idea that raised eyebrows,” Andrea explains. “Having an ice rink here in California’s Central Valley, where we’re not exactly known for our sub-freezing temperatures. Part of our inspiration came from our daughters and a desire to provide a place where people of all ages in our community could have a safe, fun place to gather. The other part came from a desire to support Downtown Modesto’s (DOMO) renaissance efforts and give people another great reason to come visit. Skating is quintessential winter fun, an enduring timeless pastime.”
Skaters ranging from three years old to grandparents glide about the rink as music plays. Spectators sip hot cocoa under the warmth of patio heaters. “We are a great destination for birthday parties, youth groups, company team-building, holiday parties and more,” says Andrea. “We also have a wonderful selection of party packages plus special themed events.”
Strong Community Support…
MOI enjoys the support of organizations and companies in Modesto. Returning Title sponsor Modesto Subaru’s Director & General Manager Chris Godden says that “MOI has been an essential part of creating a vibrant downtown environment during our holiday season. We couldn’t be happier to continue this partnership which brings families and friends together, supports our youth, and promotes local businesses.” MOI was a nominee for Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
“We’ve got a great city with great things happening, and Modesto On Ice is one of them,” says City of Modesto Mayor Ted Brandvold. “MOI is one of the special community and family-building activities that make Modesto what it is.” SaveMart is sponsoring the Snack Shack. Other rink sponsors that have helped MOI return each season include HERC Rentals, Bertelson Precast, Brenden Theatres, DoubleTree of Modesto, Gallo Arts Center, DOMO, Modesto View, Titan Crane & Rigging, Final Cut Media, Rank Investigations, City Signs and more.
…While Supporting the Community
“We’re passionate about giving back to youth organizations,” Andrea shares. “We have sponsored youth groups from Scouts, FFA clubs, foster home and after-school programs to come and experience ice skating. Each season on Giving Tuesday we have donated a private Ice session to the Society for disAbilities to come enjoy ice skating with their families in an inclusive, supportive environment. Wheelchairs and assistive devices are welcome on the ice and it’s so rewarding to see individuals of all ages and abilities enjoying this time together. We also offer fundraising opportunities to local school booster clubs, parent organizations, and student-led clubs. MOI donates 20% of the fund-raising session ticket sales back to the organization.”
Part of the fun atmosphere is a result of a carefully trained 25-person staff dedicated to creating a memorable experience for every guest. “It’s so rewarding to see our staff grow and develop their customer service skills and attention to excellence throughout our season,” says Andrea. “Our staff members become very close to one another and refer to each other as “MOI Family.”
