It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world, at least when it comes to Spring 2020 fashions. From Saturday Night Fever collars, ugly-wallpaper prints, and hot pants, to floating tulle tiered skirts, t-strap sandals, and luscious spring-toned leather, the season is polarizing, sometimes perplexing, but above all, playful. Pick one or two accents from our rundown and you’ll be fearlessly fashionable this Spring.
Neon. Especially in our short, hot springs, a pop of blaze orange, neon green, or hottest pink can be a clever nod to the climate even in conservative work environments. Consider a neon shell under a blazer, or a bright scarf to pop an open collared shirtwaist dress. They’re surprisingly wearable—just chose the one that suits your skin tone.
Tiered Tulle. This filmy net fabric makes a delicious swish as you walk, but to triumph in tiers, proportion is key as this gives you volume.Look for a cinched waist and keep your upper half body-conscious so you look like the belle of the ball, not a bell. Extra style points if your new tulle tiers are in one of the neon hues.
Spring Leather. Why lock your leather away for nine months of the year? Look for luscious colors like robin’s egg blue, coral, neon green, or even traditional black napa leather, pieced into wide tiered white lace skirts.
Vests. This gentleman’s essential suiting piece is part of the menswear-for-ladies look this season, whether all pieces are of the same material, or the waistcoat is mismatched. Consider a leather iteration in one of those lovely spring shades.
The Bermuda Short Suit. Sleek and discreet, this is a great way to look coolly professional when it’s nearly ninety. If you’re not long legged, pair your Bermudas with flats for a longer leg line.
Crochet. The best of the new crochet offerings are delicate and tailored, almost a nod to the heyday of the St. John knit suit. Less boho than beguiling, these are dressy, feminine silhouettes. Buy separates now and wear them together, then wear the top and shirt separately in the coming seasons.
T-Straps, Heeled Loafers, Mary Janes. Great news in shoes this spring. The evergreen t-strap is back, plus two classics have been brought to the forefront for good reason. See the chunky-heeled loafer, at a variety of heights, perfect and practical for work. The Mary Jane, with its iconic instep strap, has become sophisticated. In a two inch heel (or more) it’s a feminine workhorse for daily wear. The freshest versions this season wear bright tones.
The Disco Collar.Super wide and super bad. You’ll find these everywhere, in blouses, jackets, and outerwear. One of the best was Paco Rabanne’s gleaming white silk blazer with top lapels of contrasting black silk, tailored into wide, razor-edged wings. Unbutton those collars and spread them wide over jackets, sweaters, outerwear.
Hot Pants.Since disco is back, why not these? If you’re shy, Chanel does at least sanction wearing them over black semi-opaque tights.
The ‘ugly sandal.’We’re talking about your favorite flat, ergonomic footbed sandal. Yes, they’re comfortable, but now they’re work appropriate, or so we’re being told. To give this a chance of working, though, be sure you’re wearing one of the dressed up versions, in napa leather bossed with bright hardwear.
60’s retro prints. This year’s ‘It’ prints turned to 60’s and 70’s wallpaper for inspiration, including tones of pea green, umber, and siena. Only the boldest individuals will go top-to-toe, but we’d be willing to pop a sober suit or dress with a whimsical scarf.
